Use of Electroconvulsive Therapy in Adolescents

 
 
 
 
This paper looks at the use of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in adolescents with severe mood disorders. The paper begins with a short introduction, followed by an Executive Summary, which is repeated again later in the paper in an expanded form after the literature review, in a version which is about half as long again as the executive summary. The Executive Summary does not seem to be much of a summary, being as long as it is, and seems superfluous since it is hardly any shorter than the full body of the paper which follows (1521-1527). It begins with indications for ECT, which are a combination of the diagnosis, the severity of symptoms, and their lack of response to other forms of treatment (1522). Contraindications are then noted briefly, and assessment of the patient described. This involves a psychiatric evaluation; a review of past treatments; a physical examination with laboratory tests; cognitive assessment of the patient; gaining the informed consent of the adolescent and parents after educating them regarding the procedure; getting a second opinion; and maintaining supportive treatment during the course of ETC (1523).
