There are four different tactics that the establishment uses to combat protestors: avoidance, suppression, adjustment and capitulation (Bowers, Ochs and Jensen, 1993, 49-60). In avoidance tactics representatives of an organization may try the tactic of counter-persuasion, trying to convince the leaders of a protest that they are wrong. They may try evasion, or postponement in dealing with the issue, or make things difficult for the protestors by denying them the means for their protest (access to signs, locations etc.) When using suppression, organizations can harass the leaders of dissent, deny their demands (for meetings etc.), banish them from certain establishments, or purge them from an organization.
