A Close Reading of Chapter 55, The Da Vinci Code

As Chapter 55 of Dan Brown's novel, The Da Vinci Code, begins, Sophie Neveu, Robert Langdon, and Sir Leigh Teabing are gathered in Teabing's study, engaged in a discussion of the Holy Grail. Teabing's somewhat "sermonic" introductory remarks position the discussion that is to come: "The Holy Grailą.Most people ask me only where it isą.the far more relevant question is this: What is the Holy Grail (231)?" This query is designed to focus the attention of both the key characters of Langdon and Neveu and of the reader on the vital element of the so-called Grail mystery: the nature of the Grail, presumed by most scholars throughout history to have been a cup or krater-like vessel used at the Last Supper and shared by Christ and His Apostles. Understanding what the Grail might be is key to the entire narrative developed by Brown (236) who posits the argument that Da Vinci's painting of The Last Supper is "the entire key to the Holy Grail mystery."

This chapter sets the stage for what may be the most important revelation in the book ū a revelation that will appear in Chapter 56, when Teabing informs Sophie Neveu that the Holy Grail is not, as revealed in Chapter 55, merely a "person (236)," it is a person whose role in the life of Christ was far larger and more important than is conventionally assumed.
