The purpose of this paper is to identify several methodological elements in the following article:Dowson, M. & McInerey, D. M. (2001). Psychological parameters of students' social and work avoidance goals. Journal of Behavioral Psychology, 95(1), 15-42. The study examined students' avoidance behavior as related to social and work goals. An attempt is made to identity the psychological components involved in avoidance goals. This study utilized both case study and field study methods and techniques. Diverse types of interview methods were employed (e.g., structured and unstructured interviews, conversational interviews, etc.). Also, observers were used to monitor students' classroom behavior The study's sample consisted of middle school students (N = 86) between 12 and 15 years of age. All students were Australians who were attending one of six schools located in a metropolitan area.
