Internet Searching

To begin a search on the internet, there should first be an analysis of the topic needed to decide where to begin searching, using distinctive words and phrases, specifying a narrow aspect of a broad subject, and using synonyms and variant spellings (Recommended). Google is a good place to start with a distinctive word or phrase. There are many other search engines on the web - Lycos, AltaVista, Infoseek, Webcrawler, HotBot, HighBeam, etc. If it is a broader topic, then start at Yahoo search. For synonyms or equivalent words, choose a search engine that has Boolean or Truncation or Field Limitation functions. Be flexible, and if one approach isn't working, don't waste time on it; move on to something else. Use a different word or phrase. Look for specialized databases, and find specialized directories for your subject.

A lot of time can be wasted searching directories, so if what is needed is not found quickly, then move on (Recommended). Following links can sometimes provide the information being sought, but often these links are used for commercial purposes or may be used by people for reasons having no relation to the search at hand. Any search will bring up thousands of documents which are of no value to the search, so learn to recognize such things as book advertising, college course ads, commercials sales entries and such, which become easy to recognize from their URLs after a while. Look for home pages, e.g. American Psychological Society that are relevant to the topic for leads. Above all, don't get distracted and stay focused on the topic.
