The break up of the Soviet Union came about for a number of reasons, stemming back to its formation after the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 (Fall). In trying to create a unified, centralized, socialist state, the Soviets underestimated the resistance of the non-Russian ethnic groups in the country (more than 50 percent of the population). Secondly, their economic planning failed to meet the needs of the State because of the ongoing arms race with the United States, which led to greater economic decline necessitating reforms. Thirdly, the philosophy of Communism, which the Bolsheviks tried to instill in the people of the Soviet Union never really took a firm hold. When Mikhail Gorbachev came to power in 1985, the country had deep economic and political problems, and he embarked on a two-stage strategy to correct them (Fall).
