While most Latinos in the United States still have strong ties to the Catholic church, a 2002 study showed that of the 3.54 million Latinos in the U.S., 23 percent identified themselves s Protestant or other Christian religious denominations (Murray). Of these, the majority (6.2 million of about 8 million) consider themselves Evangelical or "born-again". However, the majority of American Latinos, 70 percent, are Catholics, making the Catholic church and the icon of Our Lady of Guadalupe the most identifiable symbols of Latino religion in this country.
