Social Movements and Their Consequences

The purpose of this brief essay is to answer a series of questions regarding social movements and their consequences. Collective action, the difficulty of establishing effective social movements, the role played by organizations in social and political movements, methods used to facilitate social change and the focus or revolutionary content of social movements are at issue herein.

People act collectively in democratic and non-democratic regimes to garner strength and to promote mutual issues. Rena Palloff (2) has noted that social change efforts attempt to impact the policymaking process in a number of different ways and at different systemic levels. Palloff (1) described her own activities in the anti-Vietnam war movement at the University of Wisconsin at Madison during the late 1960s and early 1970s as an example of a social movement that ultimately did succeed in affecting and changing public policy. Collective action in this instance was the result of a somewhat spontaneous outpouring of resistance to governmental policy, as it was during the Civil Rights Movement in the U.S. as well. Collective, individuals realize that they can make a more effective effort to change policy.

Common interests are not always as "common" as one might think. Today, Benjamin Barber (228) sees environmentalism and the so-called Green Movement as social change efforts having enormous impact upon policymaking. Similarly, Baron and Byrne (214-216) are of the opinion that ongoing
