This is an excerpt from the paper...

This study explored whether identification with the occupational role, death anxiety, and life satisfaction were related to successful resolution of the psychosocial crisis of old age in a sample of retirees. The conceptual framework of the study was the theory of Erik Erikson who postulated that the final developmental crisis people face in old age is the time when a person confronts having only one life and must accept or reject what has occurred in his/her life. Integrity is the favorable outcome at this stage which Erikson defined in terms of depth, faith, serenity, and simplicity.

Sample subjects were retirees (N=90) at least 60 years of age or older who were drawn from three local agencies serving older people. All retires completed the Life Satisfaction Index, the Death Anxiety Scale, the Self-Description Questionnaire (measuring degree of resolution of Erikson's final psychosocial crisis) and the researcher-designed Demographic/Background Data Sheet.

(1) Those retirees who resolved the eighth and final psychosocial crisis were more satisfied with life and had lower levels of death anxiety that those retirees who had not successfully resolved the crisis.

(2) Degree of identification with the occupational role did not differ depending upon whether the crisis was successfully resolved.

(3) Life satisfaction levels increased with age.

(4) Among men who did not successfully resolve the crisis, death anxiety increased

isting literature and design methodology. The fifth and final chapter of the study presents a brief summary of the research. This summary is followed by a delineation of conclusions formulated on the basis of the study's findings and a list of recommendations for future research in the field. CHAPTER 2 REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE Introduction This study examined whether successful resolution of the psychosocial crisis of old age was related to degree of death anxiety and life satisfaction in a large sample of retirees. In addition, this relationship was examined to see if it differed in relation to several demographic variables (age, educational background, religion, and whether the retirement was voluntary or involuntary). So that the study may be placed within the context of the existing research, this chapter presents a review of the general literature on all of the variables explored in the study. The review first examines the historical development of the conceptual theory underlying the research, namely Erikson's psychosocial development model. Studies related to retirement and the conceptual model are then described and discussed. This discussion is followed by a review of the existing literature on r
