The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a federation of seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, and Umm al-Qaiwain (Feld). Political power of the emirates is centered in Abu Dhabi, which controls most of the UAE's economic and resource wealth. The two largest of the emirates, Abu Dhabi and Dubai, contribute over 80 percent of the UAE's income. A permanent constitution was approved by the Federal National Council in 1996, replacing a provisional document which had been renewed every five years since the creation of the country in 1971. The current head of state is Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan, who took office in November last year following the death of his father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan. The currency of the UAE is the Dirham, which had a market exchange rate on April 6, 2005 of US$1 = 3.67 Dirhams (Feld). The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for 2004 was $95.5 billion and for 2005 is projected to be $104.3 billion. The Real GDP for 2004 was 6.4% and for 2005 is projected to be 6.5%. The 2004 inflation rate was 2.8%. The UAE's major trading partners are Japan, United Kingdom, United States, Singapore, Germany, South Korea, Iran and India. The major exports of the UAE are crude oil, natural gas, re-exports, aluminum, dried fish and dates, and exports for 2004 totaled $77.8 billion. Its major imports are manufactured goods, machinery, transportation equipment and food, which totaled $60.5 billion in 2004.
