Research at universities is becoming a complex issue on many fronts because of the variety of sources of funding, both governmental and private, and the questions of ownership of the results of such research. Although medical issues have gained much of the public spotlight, where the question of the validity of test results on drugs has been questioned recently in light of the heavy involvement of the pharmaceutical industry in funding research, many other legal issues arise. The National Institutes of Health have issued Regulations and Ethical Guidelines for all those doing research involving human subjects at their own research facilities which can serve as a model for university researchers everywhere (National).
