Educators' Views of School Violence NATURE OF THE STUDY The Research Pr

This is an excerpt from the paper...

In the last fifteen years school violence has increased in frequency and scope (Clark, 1994). Further, the violence is not restricted solely to students. According to Clark (1994), public school teachers are yearly being threatened, mugged, raped, assaulted, robbed, and extorted; and the rates of these crimes against teachers are increasing at an alarming rate.

Regarding the levels of school violence, Clark (1994) reports that approximately 42 percent of teachers witness at least one serious fight every month; moreover, in any given month, approximately 20 percent of public school teachers will be threatened by students.

The foregoing statistics are reported for public schools in general; however, some authors have specifically examined public school violence in junior high. For example, Scott (1994) reports that there is an extremely high degree of risk for violence among American youth in this age group. In addition, the risk factor is disproportionally higher for African-American youth and young people from other minority groups. Contributing factors to high violence levels are said to include attitudinal, social, and behavioral variables such as the use of alcohol and other drugs, and violence related behaviors such as vandalism.

Most administrators felt that school violence was becoming more of a problem among female students and was beginning to increase in elementary schools. An interesting study of teacher stress conducted by Ituah (1990) has implications for teacher perceptions of violence. The general purpose of the study was to examine the comparisons between reported stress by teachers and the grade level taught by same and to determine whether teachers and building administrators have the same perceptions of stress factors. Through use of survey questionnaire, responses of teachers and building administrators from selected schools of a large school district of Harris County, Texas, were examined. Overall findings of a one-way, factorial analysis of variance indicated that teachers were experiencing relatively strong levels of stress. Regarding school violence, it was observed that middle school teachers experienced more stress around discipline policies and school violence than any other group of teachers. A substantial portion of the violence in public schools, especially inner city schools, is
