Amos, C.I., Goldstein, A.S. & Harris, E.L. (1991). Familiality of breast cancer and socioeconomic status in blacks. Cancer Research, 51(7), 1793-1797.

Data drawn from the Cancer and Steroid Hormone study were analyzed to investigate familial patterns and breast cancer. Familial aggregation was found to be consistent with Mendelian recessive transmission of a single major gene. Methodological considerations in the examination for familial patterns were discussed and recommendations for the best methods were formulated.

Ansell, D., Whitman, S., Lipton, R. & Cooper, R. (1993). Race, income and survival from breast cancer at two public hospitals. Cancer, 72(10), 2974-2978.

Hospital Cancer Registry data on 887 black females and 265 white females with breast cancer were analyzed using Cox regression and Kaplan-Meier techniques. The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of age, race, stage, treatment, and income status on survival rates. The strongest predictor of racial differences were differences in income status. It was concluded that income differences may exert a strong effect in public hospitals than in non-public hospitals.

This study investigated the pattern of acquired mutations in the P53 gene and its connection to carcinogenesis. Subjects were black women with breast cancer living in Michigan; subjects were selected because of this population's excessively high rate of breast cancer mortality. Findings showed an excess of particular mutations when the sample was compared with a rural, midwestern, white sample of white women. It was recommended that future research be undertaken in order to determine the causes of these diff...
