Laboratory Procedure This laboratory examin

This is an excerpt from the paper...

This laboratory examined how the colligative properties of solutions affects their freezing point. 2.00mL of ethyl alcohol was placed in a test tube, 10.00 mL distilled water was added, and the two mixed by blowing air into the solution using a pipette. A thermometer was placed in the solution, and the top of the test tube covered with parafilm with the thermometer sticking out of the top. A layer of ice and salt was placed into a styrofoam cup to a level of approximately one inch. The test tube was placed in the cup on top of the ice and salt. Layers of salt and ice were added, with the thermometer held upright, until the outside of the test tube was covered. The parafilm was removed from the top of the test-tube and the temperature of the solution in the tube was recorded. The temperature was then measured and recorded every minute until the temperature did not go any lower and the solution in the tube was frozen to a slushy state. The process was carried out twice for ethyl alcohol, and then twice using isopropyl alcohol.
