Scientific Knowledge

Science is the study of anything that can be examined, tested, and proved. It is based on verifiable facts and not on personal beliefs. Scientific facts may have to be modified over time as new facts come to light, and in this way science builds on work done in the past as new and better technologies are developed to examine a particular subject. Some scientific knowledge has remained constant over time, such as the science of numbers, while other scientific knowledge, such as that about the genetics of cancer is relatively new, developing only in the last 50 years. New discoveries sometime merely prove existing theories are correct, such as those proving that elastic object stretch proportional to the force applied to them, which was discovered in 1676 and still holds true.

What is already known in science can be used to discover other things. Knowing the focal length of a lens allows a scientists to predict how it will focus light; knowing the makeup and properties of two chemicals allows a scientists to predict what will happen if the two are mixed. Predictions can be sometimes made about things which are not yet known, for instance the periodical table of elements when first drawn up contained some elements not yet discovered, but which have since been discovered and the predictions proven correct. The theory of continental drift is also an example: it was not believed when first proposed, but has since proven to be true. Scientific knowledge is constantly being added to and refined, but is always provable and based on fact.

The air is in constant motion, which prevents the heavier elements from settling to the lower layers. Ozone is present in extremely low proportions in the lower atmosphere and only slightly higher in the layer between 19 and 48 km. Downdrafts and atmospheric disturbances carry some ozone closer to the earth. Ozone is thought to protect the earth from damage by the sun's ultraviolet radiation...
