This is an excerpt from the paper...

Weech-Maldonado, R., Meret-Hanke, L., Neff, M. C., & Mor, V. (2004). Nurse staffing patterns and quality of care in nursing homes. Health Care Management Review, 29(2), 107-116.

The theses for this paper were that a higher RN staffing mix will have a positive effect on quality of care outcomes; a higher RN staffing mix will be positively associated with improved process of care; a higher proportion of full-time RNs will have a positive effect on quality of care outcomes; a higher proportion of full-time RNs will be positively associated with improved process of care; a higher RN staffing mix will have an indirect positive effect on the quality of outcomes through its positive effect on process care; and a higher proportion of full-time RNs will have an indirect positive effect on the quality of outcomes through its positive effect on processes of care.

The study used a structure-process-outcome framework and the resource-based view of the firm to look at direct and indirect effects of registered nurse staffing patterns at 1134 nursing homes in five states - New York, Maine, Vermont, Kansas and South Dakota. The data used for the study came from the Minimum Data Set Plus (MDS+), the Online Survey Certification of Automated Records (OSCAR) file and the Area Resource File. Registered nurse staffing patterns were found to affect the quality of care of patients both directly and indirectly through the process of delivery of care.
