Club Med, Inc.

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Club Med, Inc., is the American part of Club MTditeranTe, a French resort company that began operations in 1950. When the first "village" (as Club Med resorts are called) opened in Majorca, visitors stayed in U.S. Army tents. The emphasis from 1950 through the mid-1970s was on low-budget vacation packages targeted to unmarried individuals. Villages had no door locks, no safes for valuables and often no in-room telephones. The seclusion which became a hallmark for the villages also provided built-in security, which was enhanced as necessary with fences and alarms.

In addition to seclusion, Club Med offered an allinone package that included all meals, activities and lodgings for the duration of the guest's stay. There was no tipping. Entertainment was provided by the village staff, and amateur nights featuring guests were also popular. Air conditioning was generally unavailable. Food and beverage service consisted of buffetstyle meals eaten at tables for eight and open bars. The focus of these early vacations was on inexpensive getaways designed to attract adventurous (and generally liberal) singles.

Population shifts in the 1970s and 1980s forced Club Med to rethink some of its marketing strategies. Earnings during the 1970s were strong as singles sought out adventure and romance in the villages located in Cancun, Eleuthera, Mauritius and other exotic locations. As the American baby boomers who had been the mainstay of the company during the 1970s matured, how

. . .
St. Lucia, Eleuthera and Punta Cana villages offer children training on the trapeze and trampoline, as well as in the art of juggling. Adult-only activities are still available, and guests can earn their NAUI or PADI diving certificates (for an additional fee) at some clubs. Horse riding lessons for adults often includes information on horse anatomy as well as how to care for the animals. Families who want to share the vacation experience rather than have separate vacations for the adults and children can participate in Fitness Month, culinary festivals, and mixed doubles tennis tournaments. In order to accommodate families better, some villages have been modified to have connecting rooms, and private bathrooms have been added to nearly all rooms in the villages. Growth in the children's market has been slow (six percent in 1989 and 1990), but consistent. During 1989, 120,000 adults and 24,000 children visited the Caribbean resorts; children were not allowed at the resorts when the company began operations nearly 40 years previous (Elster, C9). By far the greatest innovation which Club Med has undertaken is the addition of Club Med 1, the largest sailing ship in the world at the time it was launched in 1990 (Baum, 42).
