SELECTED DEMOGRAPHIC AND MARKETING DATA ON THE ELDERLY SEGMENT OF THE AMERICAN POPULATION This research develops selected demographic and marketing information on the elderly population in the United States. For purposes of this research, elderly is defined as age 50 and older; however, the principal focus, where possible, is on the 65-74 year old age group. With respect to income levels of the elderly, the areas of interest are (1) household income, and (2) individual disposable income. Data pertaining to these factors are presented in the discussions which follow. Household income data for those persons aged 50 and older are presented in Table 1 (income distribution), which may be fond on the following page, and Table 2 (average household income), which may also be found the following page. As the data presented in Table 1 indicate, the proportion of elderly persons in lower-income decline occurs in the move from the 50-64 age group to the 65-74 age group, but that another significant decline also occurs in the move from the 65-74 age group to the 75 and older age group. Disposable income data for individuals in the 62-74 age group are presented in Table 3, which may be found on page 3.
