The purpose of this paper is to present a summary and personal evaluation of Murphy, Glazer and Grundy's (1977) study of marital status and long-term illness in Great Britain. To this end, the paper summarizes the study's general purpose, hypotheses, methods, results, and conclusions. This is followed by a general evaluation of the research. Regarding Murphy, Glazer and Grundy's (1977) purposes and hypotheses, the authors cite numerous studies (N=35) published highly reputable journals indicating that there is an association between illness and marital status. Additional studies are cited (n=28) that offer conceptual explanations for the observed association. Based on the reviewed literature, the authors conclude that the relationship between health and marital status, for populations of older people, has been insufficiently researched and that more information is needed on the contributive effects of several variables. Although Murphy, Glazer and Grundy (1977) do not formulate or test formal hypotheses, they do investigate three research questions concerning the variables they state to be most in need of further research---these variables concern those of cohabitating rather than married couples, remarried versus first married couples, and whether couples are living in private or nonprivate households.
