Carter Lindberg has compiled an impressive list of sources, many translated into English for the first time, in the production of his book Beyond Charity: Reformation Initiatives for the Poor (Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 1993). And although the book is focused principally on the efforts of Martin Luther (and the Lutheran church) as it relates to the Reformation, it has broad and valuable implications not only for the contemporary Protestant church, but for the whole of the Christian Church. The writer of Ecclesiastes conjectured: "there is nothing new under the sun" (1:9b). As Lindberg discovered and, in turn, reveals to his readers, attitudes concerning the poor in the later Middle Ages and into the time of the Reformation are not substantially different than we seem to encounter today.
