Alleviating Stress

THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT WAY TO ALLEVIATE STRESS

WebMD University (2006:1) defines stress as any factor that causes a person tension either mentally or physically, and reports that there are many ways to cope with it. However, what is the single best way to cope with stress? Although it can be jarring at first, Magellan Health Services (2006: 1-2) reports that the best method for alleviating stress is altering one's lifestyle.

With respect to the foregoing, lifestyle changes have been found to significantly reduce stress for a variety of both mental and physical conditions. For example, altering lifestyle lowered stress in people with diabetes (Clark, Zimmer & Sanchez, 2006: 89-97), cancer (Daubenmier & associates, 2006: 125-130), heart disease (Opie, Commerford & Gersh, 2006: 69-78), and many other physical illnesses and injuries (Greenberg, 2005: 61-95). As to mental conditions, changes in people's lifestyles has helped to reduce the stress from a variety of mental conditions including not only depression and anxiety, but also very serious and persistent mental problems such as bipolar disorder (Hoffman & associates, 2005: 1576-1579).

What is important here is to understand that altering one's lifestyle, by reducing stress levels, can result in both better physical condition and greater emotional and mental well-being. It is this across the board effect that makes it the single most important way to alleviate stress.
