The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA, 2006:1) reports that the National Academy of Science has verified that the Earth's surface temperature has risen by about 1 degree Fahrenheit in the last 100 years with the warming increasing primarily in the last two decades. Moreover, Toner (2005: 1-2) states that the most recent analyses of data collected from tree rings, fossil shells, ice cores, and actual temperature measurements taken at 14 different locations on three continents is now showing that this warming trend is the highest it has been in 1,200 years, the period of the Vikings. This increase in earth's surface temperature is called Global Warming and has been connected to a variety of human activities (Maslin, 2005: 1-10). This paper provides a brief overview of global warming, focusing on its primary causes.
