Ozone is a form of oxygen that is selective in screening out the most damaging ultraviolet rays through a process of atomic absorption, while allowing visible light and infrared rays to penetrate (de Gruijl, 2004). A thin layer of gaseous ozone stretches above the Earth's surface, and protects the planet from the harmful effects of radiation from the Sun. The ozone layer is the main barrier between the Earth and the ultraviolet radiation emitted by the Sun. This ozone layer, however, has been steadily thinning as a result of chlorofluorocarbons, nitrogen oxides, halogen compounds, and bromine being released into the atmosphere from manufacturing and emissions (Carver, 1998).
