America is composed of a large number of immigrants from a wide range of countries, and while many of them are fully integrated into society and think of themselves primarily as being American, others prefer to cling to their ethnic roots and live in enclaves of their fellow countrymen, Hispanic segregation into enclaves occurs where there are higher numbers of Hispanics in the population, for example in large urban areas such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Newark, Bergen-Passaic, New Jersey, Miami, St. Louis and Portland (Logan). In residential areas where there is a Hispanic population of greater than 10 percent, the average Hispanic lives in a neighborhood which is more than 49 percent Hispanic, an increase from 44 percent in 1990.
