few years ago, George Castledine as nurse Consultant in the Dudley Hospitals NHS Trust identified the activities which may be performed by ANPs which include: health screening, physical and psychological assessments, health education, health promotion, teaching patients, prescribing drugs, medical techniques, medical and diagnostic testing, certification of inevitable death, counseling and coordination of care (case management) (Cox, 2000). All these activities have been incorporated into the Masters Curriculum of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioners Faculties (NONPF), based on extensive research. They are contained also in the Department of Health document (DoH,1999) that describes the nurse, midwife and health visitor consultant roles.
NONPF has categorized competencies for practice under six domains:
-Management of Client Health/Illness Status(including health
promotion, disease prevention and case management)
-The Nurse-Client Relationship (including the healing role of the nurse)
-Managing and Negotiating Health Care Delivery Systems
-Monitoring and Ensuring the Quality of Health Care Practice (Cox, 2000).
It seems reasonable to follow this plan for nurse, midwife and health volunteer consultants in the United Kingdom. The Advanced Nurse Practitioner Programme at City University is taught at Masters degree level and structured according to the above format, making it attractive to nurses intending to work anywhere in the world as an ANP. The objectives of the programme were designed to meet local, national and international service needs.
