PROCESS IDENTIFICATION AND ANALYSIS: QUALITY TOOLSHuffman Trucking, a mid-sized transport company engaged in the shipping of goods, operates in intensely competitive markets. Management developed and implemented a strategy, the principal objective of which is to develop a competitive advantage by focusing on the continuing improvement of service quality. As Burrill and Ledolter (1999) observed, seeking competitive advantage is the prime economic motivation for companies to pursue a quality improvement effort. The process that requires the most urgent attention in relation to quality improvement at Huffman Trucking is the shipping process. At Huffman Trucking, the shipping process involves at the most elemental level (a) receiving goods from shippers, (b) sorting packages for transport to destination recipients, and (c) loading the goods for transporting from Huffman facilities to destinations. The actual transportation of packages from Huffman facilities to destinations is a separate process. A number of factors affect the efficiency of the shipping process at Huffman Trucking. The two factors identified as the greatest problems at this time are (a) the system that moves packages from receipt to loading and (b) the level of cooperation between loading dock workers and transport drivers.
