Incest Survivors

This is an excerpt from the paper...

A person struggling with the issues of incest has already lived through the most difficult part of the problem - the abuse itself - and having survived against tremendous odds, they are in a position to move on with their lives and put the past behind them (If). Every survivor of incest has one important quality - strength - and with the added quality of understanding what it takes to heal, the strength will lead them to the determination to overcome their past and live for the future. In this case, there was a long family history of abuse, so the woman knows she is not alone in what she went through. Her siblings went through the same thing, and are surviving; her mother and her aunts went through it too, and they all survived. She knows it can be done.

Breaking the silence and talking about what happened helps. She is obviously ready to do that, and even to confront her parents for what happened to her and which they ignored. Having survived so far means the woman has stamina, and being ready to confront those she feels responsible means she is ready to fight back and reclaim her life, which is a good, positive sign. Sometimes the coping mechanisms developed in c

Once we can stand on our own two feet, we will be ready to stand next to someone, and we can focus on having a good relationship with ourselves and others. Survivors of Incest Anonymous (SIA) teaches its members not to deny what has happened to them, not to convince themselves that they imagined the incest, and not to think that it was in any way their own fault (Survivors). Everyone has a healthy need for love and attention and acceptance, and some of us have had to pay a high price for those things. However, survivors of incest must not accept responsibility for what happened to them. It hurts to open up old wounds, and bring these memories to the surface once more, but if we can do it among friends, the more we talk about it, the more the pain and anger will recede. Everyone must decide their own course for recovery, and every day, they will become stronger and recognize themselves as survivors. The Survivors of Incest Anonymous (SIA) has a twelve step program which reflects the unique needs for those recovering from the effects of sexual abuse in childhood (SIA): 1.
