Analysis of a Law Office

This is an excerpt from the paper...

The Law Offices of Silva & Associates specialize in criminal law, but also provide legal services in other areas, including probate and civil proceedings. The law office contains a diverse group of people working together at both the legal and business side of the law, and there is a fine balance between the practice of law and the running of a profitable business. Silva & Associates works with local colleges and universities in providing intern opportunities to students in both paid and unpaid positions. This research examines the organization of the law firm, including the effect that the organization has on office morale.

Steve Silva started the practice after the Korean War, and retired in the early 1990s. Today, two of Steve's children (Tim and Peter) are full partners in the organization, along with Reuben Hernandez. Hernandez came to the organization in the mid-1970s. Associates include Tiffany Larsen and Katie Brown.

The partners have an equal say in the running of the organization, although Tim is generally recognized as being the senior of the partners. He has the lightest caseload, and reserves his services for particular clients. Tim oversees the running of the office and generally serves as the CEO and COO of the organization if it were to have such positions. The associates report to Reuben Hernandez, as do the two paralegals (these are employed full-time to perform rudimentary tasks such as research and clerking functions). Interns are generally ass

These meetings serve as a brainstorming session where different strategies are discussed, and problems are discussed before they become serious. These can be problems within the office, or problems that an attorney has encountered in one of the cases. Any interns working at the firm are included in these meetings to help them understand the workings of a law office. The other meeting that reinforces the formal structure is a monthly meeting that is held with everyone in the office. This meeting is held at seven in the morning on the last Friday of the month, and one of the senior partners picks up breakfast pastries for the participants. This is a meeting where the schedules for the next month are discussed, and where everyone is kept informed about any issues that may prove problematic. The tone of these meetings, which are again chaired by Tim, is informal, and there is no time limit. Initially, the meetings were limited to one hour, but the firm has learned that such a limitation can result in some critical issues not being discussed. Meetings typically last 45 minutes, but some have gone as long as two h
