This article discusses two qualitative studies that measured whether children understood the difference between sex-appropriate toys, and if so, at what age. For the first study, the actual hypothesis was that knowledge of sex-appropriateness cues children to prefer certain toys over others. The independent variables used were sex, age, and 24 pairs of black and white pictures used to measure toy preferences. The subjects were children ages 2, 4, and 6 years with 10 boys and 10 girls for each age group. These children were selected from a variety of day-care centers, pre-schools, and kindergartens in a small mid-western city. The children were asked to choose which toys they liked. The dependent or outcome variables for this study were the mean number of sex-appropriate choices made by each age group within each gender. The numbers for the girls were 12.2
