Dimensions of Leadership

Zaleznik defines leadership as requiring the use of power to influence the thoughts and actions of others. He defines managers as people who solve problems by organizing people to achieve the best end result in order to please both the people doing the task and their employer. Zaleznik suggests that the relationships that managerial leaders have with their subordinates create a more productive and positive work environment than would be possible if a manager did not also have leadership skills. After careful consideration of the definition of leaders and managers presented in the reading, I believe I work for a manager rather than a leader. It is possible that my supervisor was a leader at some point. However, rather than put forth the effort necessary to be remain a leader, my supervisor has opted to take a less difficult path by becoming, or remaining, just a manager. To be a good leader, an individual must:

Accept the blame when inadequate or improper training results in mistakes. My manager insists on holding subordinates accountable for gaps in their training.

Be technically competent, but tolerant of employees who are not yet fully proficient. My supervisor is critical of any mistake irrespective of who makes it or how much or how little experience they might have.

Know to criticize in private. My superior is ready to criticize performance at any time irrespective of who might be listening.

Hold subordinates accountable for their actions or inaction. My manager is inconsistent in his approach to disciplining subordinates.

Keep subordinates informed. My boss seems to view information as leverage and is reluctant to share any meaningful information with his direct reports.

Set high but realistic goals for subordinates. My manager sets unrealistic goals and then appears disappointed when these goals are not reached.
