When we think of a healthy diet, we think of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats. These are the foods nutritionists, doctors, and even the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) tell us to eat (USDA's Food Guide PyramidĂ , 2005). But what if eating healthy foods is not really as critical to maintaining good health as the government and most nutritional professionals have led us to believe? While it is common knowledge that, in terms of nutrient content and purity, natural foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein rank superior to a McDonald's Big Mac, might it be possible that our focus on the types of food we eat has been misguided? Perhaps, instead of junk food consumption, the direct cause of obesity and related health problems in western countries such as the United States is really how much we eat.
