EXCLUSIVITY OF EDWARDIAN JEWELRY (1901-1914) AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO THE BRITISH ARISTOCRACY IN THE BELLE EPOCH: AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

1. Barstow, P. The English Country House Party. London: Sutton Publishing, 1998.

The English country house party was a part of the way of life of English aristocrats during the belle epoch period (1871-1914). This work covers aristocratic personalities and their lifestyles through avenues that extend far beyond country house parties. The work provides insights into the roles played by art, including jewelry, in the lives of aristocrats, especially so in the last years of the belle epoch that in England defined the Edwardian period (1901-1914).

2. Black, J. A. The Story of Jewelry: A History of Jewels. London: Orbis, 1974.

This work provides a comprehensive history of jewelry and its social roles. The work is far more comprehensive than an examination of either (a) the belle epoch period (1871-19

ks, 1973. This work focuses on the histories of specific items of jewelry, as well as on the development of jewelry art from Renaissance through the early-twentieth century. The work covers both the belle epoch (1871-1914) period in Western Europe and the Edwardian period (1901-1914) in England. The work provides useful background material for the proposed study. 13. Gere, C. American & European Jewellery 1830-1914. New York: Crown, 1975. While the primary focus of this work is on jewelry from both Europe and America during a time span that included both the belle epoch period (1871-1914) in Western Europe and Edwardian period (1901-1914) in England, the author does provide useful information for an investigation of the role of jewelry in Edwardian England. The material in this work is useful for the proposed study. 14. Gernsheim, A. Fashion and Reality. London: Faber & Faber, 1963. This work focuses on the use of fashion in society. Jewelry is one component of fashion and costume. The work covers fashion in a global context. The examination, however, provides information useful for the proposed study concerning both the belle epoch (1871-1914) in Western Europe and the Edwardian period (1901-1914) in England. 15.
