Airline Deregulation

The effects of industry deregulation on specific aspects of airline industry performance were assessed in this study. Mean data for 1979, the last full operational year prior to airline deregulation, and mean data for 1992, the first full operational year subsequent to the completion of airline deregulation, were compared in the testing of the hypotheses in this study.

Hypotheses were tested in relation to (1) flight interruption rates, (2) destination cities served, (3) frequency of service to destination cities, and (4) on-time performance rates. Mean data for each of these variables for each of the two time points measured are presented in the chart, below.
