ACADEMY OF INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS: A REVIEW
The Academy of International Business (AIB) is a 45-year old organization (Academy of International Business, 2004a) that focuses its activities on three objectives (Academy of International Business, 2004b). The objectives, which define the organization's mission, are as follows (Academy of International Business, 2004b):
Promoting and "facilitating the exchange of information and ideas among" qualified people who are have a stake in the effectiveness of international business education (p. 1); the AIB facilitates information exchange through the organization's electronic discussion list (AIB-L) and the publication of the Journal of International Business
Promoting research in international business to develop useful knowledge for both practitioners and educators
Encouraging other entities to cooperate with the AIB in pursuit of the AIB's internationalization objectives
In 2004, the AIB has a membership totaling almost 3,000 that represents more than 60 countries. The organization's membership includes business practitioners, business educators, governmental organizations, and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The AIB also has 13 chapters (regional branches of the organization), although not all of the AIB's nearly 3,000 members are affiliated with one of the chapters. Five of the 13 chapters represent regional areas in the United States, five of the chapters represent regions in south and East Asia, two chapters represent Western Europe, and one chapter represents Canada.
The Academy of International Business Foundation was created as a separate organization from the AIB. The AIB Foundation generates funds through contributions to support (a) student scholarships, (b) faculty fellowships, (c) research grants, (c) travel grants, (d) doctoral dissertation grants, and (e) publications subsidies.
