ERP and Supply Chain Integration in China

Zapf is a toy manufacturer based in Germany that uses Asian production facilities and sells throughout the world, including through discount retailers in the United States. The company has enjoyed some success in the United States, and has gained a competitive edge through its Asian manufacturing while maintaining a small but loyal following for handmade toys from Germany. The company has also succeeded in building a market for its accessories that offers strong margins to retailers.

Zapf is considering shifting to supply chain management, and to using SAP as the ERP supplier in order to support this transition. Such a change could bring about considerable efficiencies as the manual inputs required to manage the supply chain would be greatly reduced and suppliers and customers would have greater visibility in the process. Zapf could focus its attention on those events and transactions that have the greatest impact on the company's operations by using the software to identify those activities.

The company already enjoys close relationships with its suppliers and customers, and this shift to a supply chain management orientation would support those relationships even more. In the highly competitive toy industry, this could result in improved financial performance, something with which the company has struggled in recent years.
