The hypothesis posed by this article is that The Olsen Twins represent a brand rather than a mere entertainment act. The jumping off point for the article is that Dualstar Entertainment Group, the company formed to manage the career of tween stars Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen ("tween" is a term devised to describe the consumer group between teens and infants û 5 to 12 year olds) has signed a pair of 13 year old boy twins to a merchandising deal. The Olsen Twins turned their entertainment careers into a billion dollar business by licensing their names and images to clothing lines, videos, CDs, and other goods. The names "Mary Kate and Ashley" and "The Olsen Twins" became brand names, hugely popular with tween girls. Their company, Dualstar, is valued at over $1 Billion based on the twins' marketing muscle. However, as they grow up and become young adults, it remains to be seen whether their popularity will transfer. To that end, they are seeking to diversify. The first effort at diversification comes in the signing of the twin Sprouse boys. These boys, like Mary Kate and Ashley at their age, are veterans of television.
