Unless students are all the same, with the same aspiration, talents, and intelligence, the only way to "standardize" a curriculum would be to develop it at the lowest common denominator, in effect cheating at least 50% of all students. Martimer Adler, who was one of the principals of the Great Books series, established by Robert Hutchins, surely would not have "standardized" the selections. It seems rather unfair of him to suggest that standardization and "democracy" are in any way related.
