1) Applicants for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award can benefit a great deal from the application process. The mere preparation of the application materials can be a helpful systematically self-analysis. Additionally, all applicants receive a feedback report detailing strengths and weaknesses of their organization. The further along in the process a company goes, the more motivation it will have to take valuable steps toward improving its total quality management. The process and feedback can also serve as a sound format for companies seeking to expand into international business, as many previous award winners (and thus much of the criteria) have a strong base in global trade. It should be noted, however, that the application process will take substantial time and manpower to complete. Any changes that are to be implemented add additional cost, and the pressure to meet deadlines for the application process may result in less than thorough analysis. Furthermore, Award winners are required to share information regarding TQM measures in place. Winners are not required to share proprietary information, but in a highly technical and competitive industry, careful consideration should be given to the prudence of sharing any management information.
