Human rights covers a number of important issues regarding poor treatment given by governments to their people and to others, and campaigns for human rights emphasize the need for governmental control, adherence to international accords and legal structures, and the treatment of some rights as fundamental to all human beings. Among the groups working on human rights campaigns today are Human Rights Watch, Physicians for Human Rights, and the Electronic frontier foundation. Human Rights Watch was founded in 1978 as Helsinki Watch (now Human Rights Watch/Helsinki). The founding was in response to a call for support from embattled local groups in Moscow, Warsaw, and Prague, and these had been set up to monitor compliance with the human rights provisions of the landmark Helsinki accords. When the Reagan administration argued that human rights abuses by rightwing authoritarian governments were more tolerable than those of leftwing totalitarian governments, Americas Watch was formed (now Human Rights Watch/Americas) to address what was seen as a double standard. Today, Human Rights Watch is the largest U.S.based human rights organization. The size of the membership and the budget for the organization are not readily available.
