The Renaissance

The Renaissance ran roughly from the mid-15th century until the early 17th century (BookRags). The Renaissance started in Italy and spread slowly through Europe, most notably to France, Spain and finally to England. The word ôRenaissanceö refers to the widespread renewal of interest in classical Greek and learning and culture that took place between the Middle Ages and the modern period in history. By the 15th century in Italy, there was intensive study of the Greek and Latin classics, ancient art and archeology, and classical history (Pioch). The ancient past was now admired and imitated. The Black Death had reduced the population considerably in the mid-14th century, creating chaotic economic conditions. Labor was scarce, the economy stagnated, industry contracted, and the 15th century saw a modest recovery with construction of palaces for urban cities, a boom in decorative arts, and renewed long-distance trade between Venice in the Mediterranean and the Hanseatic League in the north of Europe.

The culture of Renaissance Italy was dominated by highly competitive advanced urban areas (Pioch). Italy had no dominating capital city, but had a number of centers for regional states. The chief patrons of Renaissance art and literature were the merchant classes of Florence and Venice.
