Friedrich August Kekule was born in Damstadt, Germany in 1829, and attended the Gymnasium in his home town, excelling at languages and drawing (Friedrich August Kekule (von Stradonitz)). He went on the University of Giessen, planning to study architecture, but after attending a lecture by Liebig (of condenser fame), Kekule became fascinated with chemistry. He spent a year at home, pondering a decision, and decided to pursue an education in chemistry. Kekule studied in Paris from 1851 to 1853 under Dumas (substitution theory) and Gerhardt (type theory), then returned to Giessen to receive his Ph.D. and took an appointment in Switzerland for two years, followed by an appointment in London under Williamson (Friedrich August Kekule; Friedrich August Kekule (von Stradonitz)). In London, Kekule befriended Hugo Mueller, and they often discussed chemistry (Friedrich August Kekule (von Stradonitz)).
