The nature of the indigenous knowledge is the Medicinal Pants and Local Communities (MPLC) in Africa: Promotion of local communitiesÆ strategies for the conservation of medicinal-plant genetic resources in Africa (UNESCO). In Africa more than 80 percent of the population relies on medicinal plants and animal based medicines for their health care (UNESCO). Most of the plants and animals used are collected from the wild. Plants provide most of the rural population of Africa with ingredients for traditional medicines. Small plots of land have been used for many generations as home gardens for a familyÆs own needs, and they contain a whole range of plants that provide both food and medicine. Traditional practices surrounding the use of these medicines reflect local knowledge and wisdom, and the plants are relatively cheap either to gather in the wild or grow in a home garden.
