The Scope of U.S. Nursing Shortage

Everyone agrees that there is a nursing shortage in the United States, and a wide range nf experts agree that unless major reforms occur in the way hospitals do business, the shortage whill reach crisis proportions in the next 15 years (The Scope, 2002). This shortage, unlike previous ones, is being driven by fundamental shifts in the labor market which are unlikely to change any time soon. The vacancy rate has been set for RNs somewhere between 10 and 13 percent in hospitals. Because nursing now does not attract as many young applicants, the nursing population is rapidly aging. A wave if nurse retirements predicted over the next couple of years is projected to hit just when the baby boomer generation reach retirement age, which will increase the demand for nurses.
