At the end of the 19th Century, Cuba was liberated from oppressive Spanish rule, and the United States dominated the island. Motivated by imperialism and the strategic position of Cuba, as well as its new dominance as the naval power in the Western Hemisphere, the United States essentially took over Cuba after winning the war with Spain in 1898, setting up the island officially as an independent republic (in reality a protectorate); in 1903 the United States established a permanent base at Guantanamo Bay (Palmer 625-626).
