This research addresses several professional issues related to medical-surgical nursing. These issues are addressed separately in the form of answers to specific questions. Two values of nursing of special importance to me are (1) the obligation of the professional nurse to provide care to all persons requiring care regardless of the characteristics of the patient and irrespective of any personal preferences or predilections of the professional nurse, and (2) the extension by the nurse to patients of true compassion through the act of care. The significance of these values to me is addressed in the following discussion. Additionally, Mr. Lopez continues to smoke cigarettes, an established high-risk behavior associated with both the development and aggravation of emphysema (Lerner, 1990, p. 148). If the progress of this condition is not reversed, Mr. Lopez may expect reductions in breathing function, reduced vital capacity, and eventually acute and chronic respiratory failure which will lead to lifestyle limitations and a reduced probability of survival (Lerner, 1990, p. 149).
The objectives of the teaching plan for Mr. Lopez will be to (1) prevent the condition from worsening, (2) eliminate factors that promote progression of the disease, and (3) involve the family in the development of coping strategies for both the patient a
