Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) achieved eminence first as a keyboard virtuoso and later as a prolific master composer in nearly all the musical forms and genres of the high Baroque (Holoman 64). Among his great and most enduing secular workers are the six Brandenburg Concertos composed after 1717 when Bach was employed in Cothen, Germany; the pieces are addressed by Bach as "Six concertos for several instruments, dedicated to His Royal Highness, Christian Luis, Margrave of Brandenburg (Holoman 66)." These concertos are described by D. Kern Holoman (66) as "diverse of instrumentation and structure, so daring when considered alongside the hundreds of commonplace concertos of the time, that they still seem the apogee of Baroque orchestral practice."
