STANFORD-BINET INTELLIGENCE SCALE - IV General

etric properties of the scale, the median reliabilities for all tests with the exception of the Memory for Objects test were observed to be in the .80s to .90s. Further, the test composite was found to have an internal consistency reliability ranging from .95 to .99 (Sabatino, 1993). Validity coefficients observed for the test are considered generally acceptable; the manual reports no inter-scorer reliability estimates (Glutting, 1989).

Regarding scoring and interpretation, each item is scored either correct (1 point) or incorrect (0 points). The scorer then employs tables found in the manual to convert each of the subtest scores into a standard score (Glutting, 1989). From these standard scores, a composite as well as scores in each of the four general areas tested may be derived. In addition to formal scoring, the occasion of an individually administered test affords the examiner an opportunity for behavioral observation (Glutting, 1989).

Scores available for each subtest include raw scores, scaled scores, percentile ranks, and age equivalents. For each of the four areas (Verbal Reasoning; Abstract/Visual Reasoning; Quantitative Reasoning; and Short-Term Memory), scaled scores and percentile ranks are available (Glutting, 1989). The Composite Score has a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 16. Provisions are made to compute a Partial Composite Score when fewer than four areas have been assessed (Sabatino, 1993).

The fourth edition of the Stanford-Binet is considered to be a standard tool of many school psychologists (Rogers, 1995). With its recent revision, the test now provides multiple I.Q. scores (called S.A.S.'s) instead of just a single I.Q. score, as before (Sabatino, 1993). The Wechsler scales also have subtests measuring mathematic reasoning and memory; however, what distinguished the fourth edition of the Stanford Binet from the Wechsler is that it, unlike the Wechsler scales, provide IQ scores is...
