RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TWO KOREAS

This research paper discusses and analyzes the relationship between and prospects for reunification of North Korea (Democratic People's Republic of Korea or DPRK) and South Korea (Republic of Korea or ROK) since the end of the Second World War. The Korean peninsula was divided along the 38th parallel in August 1945 and has remained so ever since. Neither Korea has officially recognized the existence of the other. Until the end of the Cold War in 1989, the rivalry and tensions between the communist North and the non-communist South and their respective great power supporters perpetuated and intensified that division, culminating in the Korean War (1950-1953), which ended in a military stalemate. In the 1960s the principal proponent of reunification was DPRK which promoted it unsuccessfully as a means of politically controlling the peninsula. Detente between the United States and its Cold War adversaries, the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China (China), and the Sino-Soviet split led to tentative but unproductive North-South reunification talks in the early 1970s. By the 1980s the South's economy began outstripping that of the North. DPRK became progressively isolated diplomatically. Intermittent reunification talks, however, failed because of continued inter-Korean conflicts and political turmoil in the South. After the triumph of democracy in the South in 1987 and its continued economic progress, the South took the initiative

Triumph Of Democracy In South Korea. Ever since the days when Rhee ruled in South Korea, the specter of a communist invasion or takeover had strengthened the hand of the military and other conservative hardliners in resisting the demands of students, workers and others for a greater share of political power. According to Oberdorfer, "as the end of Chun's regime approached, the sense of imminent danger from North Korea diminished and South Koreans demanded an end to military rule" (p. 161). On June 2, 1987, Chun picked General Roh Tae Woo as his presidential successor and as the candidate of the ruling Democratic Justice Party. In response, the so-called June resistance, which involved large-scale demonstrations in South Korea's major cities, erupted. It attracted more conservative, middle class support than ever before. The American government urged the military to let democratic processes evolve. On June 29, 1987 Roh with Chun's approval agreed to endorse a change to the constitution under which the direct p
