Because of the worsening economics of studio films, the major studios have virtually elected to make less and less quality films in favor of box office hits that rely on star power and to a large degree, amazing special effects. Diversity in film has been left to the rise of the independent film that favors quality over big profits. This is not to say that all independent films are quality films. But, as Bernard Dick points out in ôUnderstanding the Medium,ö independent filmmakers share the desire to have the freedom to make their own movies without interference from studio executives interested only in the commercial success of a movie (9). This desire is not a new phenomenon.
