Evaluation of School Recommendations

This is an excerpt from the paper...

A team of consultants has been hired by the school board to address the issue that the school district is having difficulty with school-community communications. The following is an evaluation of the schoolĘs recommendations with a description, an assessment, and alternative recommendations.

The schoolĘs recommendation is based on the principles presented by Strickland and Chan (2001). Strickland and Chan stated that communication is an important tool and school leaders are reported to spend up to 80% of their time communicating with others. Therefore barriers that impede this communication must be overcome. Communication must encourage listening, welcome comments, and respect feedback. Strickland and Chan reported that when adequate communication is lacking, those involved feel as if they are not a part of the situation and they build up misunderstandings, and feelings of hostility, frustration, and defensiveness. This results in complaints that may tend to be further ignored. Alternatively, the school leader must handle complaints as soon as possible to avoid further breakdowns in communication.

In this case example, as is noted by Strickland and Chan, since many times the school leader has not been available to handle community complaints, a Complaint Form will be used to help resolve current issues. This form will document the problems in detail and provide a record of the complaints as well as the actions that are taken to resolve the iss

tive communication. Since the current problem is a specific lack of school-community communications, more than a form will be needed to alleviate this problem. The communication process has broken down and this is a barrier that needs to be overcome with careful listening that is followed by corrective actions. A Complaint Form will not provide the personal touch needed to mend resentful feelings that have resulted from a lack of communication and it will not resolve miscommunications that have developed. While the Complaint Form may be utilized, it must be presented in person rather than by electronic means, unless it is clear that a later meeting will occur to discuss the form contents. The form can then be used to document ongoing actions and reactions and facilitate problem resolutions. To build communications between the schools and the community, school leaders will need to talk directly to the community leaders and connect with mutual goals. They must collaborate together and form a reciprocal relationship that requires more than a simple form transfer. Listening is an important part of the connecting process, and this must be done in person. In addition, a warm-felt appreciation of others can hardly be communica
